A four-CD set of the legendary country blues guitarist’s 1948 sessions and his only commercial recordings. Committed to tape at the tail end of his employment (as a guide and driver) by blues and folk historian and archivist John Lomax, Leadbelly would succumb to Lou Gehrig’s disease in 1953. A man who sung his way out of prison after killing another man over a woman (one of two homicides he served time for), Leadbelly had far-reaching influence in the realms of 1970s hard/blues-rock and early-1960s activist folk music of the type preferred by Bob Dylan in his early career.
